RED-BANDED HAIRSTREAK, (Calycopis cecrops)
A very common southeastern U.S. butterfly that is found in shade close to the ground.  I’ve found them a little jumpy and they have a habit of flying right toward my face where I lose track of them.  I have a feeling they then usually head up into the trees.  Strangely, the caterpillars eat rotting leaves on the forest floor.
