OLD WORLD SWALLOWTAIL, (Papilio machaon)
A variable black swallowtail that is also found in Europe. There are many forms that can confound even an expert. The placement of the hindwing eyespot is the key mark. There are many subspecies and in the past some of these were recognized as true species. It ranges from the western Rocky Mountain states up through the Northern Great Plains, through the central part of Canada , to Alaska. In most of its range there are two broods, and further north, there is one.
