Violin Spiders, Family Sicariidae
These spiders include the notorious Brown Recluse (Loxosceles reclusa), also known as the Fiddleback or Violin Spider. There are several species in this group and the Brown Recluse is the one most encountered in human habitations. Its normal haunts are northern Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. The bite may be unnoticed by some or might be a large necrotic wound that my take months to heal and may require skin grafts. If you suspect you’ve been bitten by a Brown Recluse, seek medical attention and if possible, capture the offending spider. Even if it’s crushed, an ID should be possible to confirm and to determine if the spider is harmful or not.
