Mayflies, Order Ephemeroptera
Adult mayflies only live for a day, maybe two. The larvae, called nymphs or naiads, live in the water and most feed on plant material. The adults don’t eat. Some years, certain species have huge hatches that block the sun and pile up in drifts. Unlike any other insect, mayflies molt again after reaching the adult winged stage.
