RED-SPOTTED PURPLE, (Limenitis arthemis astyanax)
An attractive woodland butterfly found in the eastern half of the U.S. and mimics the Pipevine Swallowtail, (Battus philenor). Look for them along woodland edges sunning themselves or on mud puddles. Scat, especially from a predator, acts like a magnet. There are 2 to 3 broods flying from spring to fall. This is the same species as the White Admiral, (Limenitis arthemis arthemis). This is called polymorphism. There are intergrades where the two subspecies overlap.
