Subfamily Nymphalinae, Cresents, Checkerspots and Anglewings
This is a very large and varied subfamily consisting of familiar butterflies such as the Pearl Crescent, (Phyciodes tharos), Painted Lady, (Vanessa cardui), Mourning Cloak, (Nymphalis antiopa) and the Commas, (Polygonia sp.). Most are medium to large. Some are avid flower visitors and others prefer mud, sap, or other unsavory items such as carrion or dung.
