I was out in early spring in the North Cave Hills in Custer National Park,
South Dakota. I was chasing western pine elfins with my close friend and
butterfly expert Ron Royer. I was hiking down a gulch when something told me to
stop and look up. This porcupine, Erethizon dorsatum, was very nervously staring
back down at me. I had fun photographing it and eventually, it seemed to accept
my presence until I could get face portraits with my 200mm butterfly rig.
